Tile Calculator

Estimate how many tiles and tile packs are needed for a floor or wall area.

Before you calculate

A quick overview to help you understand what this tool does and how to use it well.

Use this tile calculator to estimate the number of tiles and tile packs needed for a project area. This is useful for flooring, backsplashes, bathrooms, kitchens, and other home projects where you want a quick planning estimate before buying materials.

You can enter the area dimensions directly or use a total square footage value, then add the size of one tile and the number of tiles in a pack to estimate how much material to buy.

Results

Your result updates after a successful calculation.

Area to tile

120 sq ft

Total square footage used for the tile estimate.

Tiles required

120

Estimated number of tiles needed to cover the area.

Tile packs required

12

Number of packs needed, rounded up to a full pack.

Tile coverage note

Each tile covers about 1 square feet.

Shows how much area one tile covers.

How it works

See the formula, calculation method, and reasoning behind the result.

This tool estimates the number of tiles needed by dividing the total area to be covered by the area of a single tile. It then divides the tile count by the number of tiles per pack and rounds up to the next full pack.

The process works like this:

  • you enter the total area, either by dimensions or total square footage
  • you enter the size of one tile
  • the calculator converts the tile dimensions into square feet
  • it estimates how many tiles are needed to cover the area
  • it estimates how many full packs are needed

This helps with practical buying decisions because tile is sold individually in theory but often purchased by the pack or box in real projects.

Worked example

Estimate tile needs for a 12 foot by 10 foot area using 12 inch by 12 inch tiles sold in packs of 10. This is a simple real-world planning case where you want both the tile count and the number of boxes to buy.

  • areaInputMode: dimensions
  • length: 12
  • width: 10
  • tileLength: 12
  • tileWidth: 12
  • tilesPerPack: 10

Example results

  • Tiles required: 120
  • Tile packs required: 12

FAQ

Common questions about this tool.

Can I enter dimensions instead of square footage?

Yes. This version lets you either enter length and width or provide the total square footage directly.

Why do tile dimensions use inches while area uses feet?

That reflects common real-world shopping and measuring patterns in home projects. Area is often measured in square feet, while tile size is often listed in inches.

When would I use a tile calculator?

A tile calculator is useful for flooring, showers, backsplashes, kitchens, bathrooms, and other tile projects where you want to estimate materials before buying.

Why does the pack count round up?

Tile is usually sold by the box or pack, so if you need part of a pack, you still need to buy the next full pack.

Does this include extra tile for cuts or waste?

No. This first version focuses on base coverage only. If you want extra for cuts, damage, or future repairs, you should plan to buy additional material.

Can I use this for wall tile too?

Yes. The same area-based logic works for both floor and wall tile planning as long as your measurements are correct.
